An Update on Charlie

In July 2010, Charlie contracted Potomac Horse Fever. After a number of complications and setbacks  endured with incredible patience by this horse, he was back in light work in November 2010. Now, in the summer of 2011, he seems comfortable and has recovered--if not exceeded!--his previous level of fitness and competed in his first ADS Combined Driving Event. Please seriously consider vaccinating your horses against PHF. You do not want to go through this ordeal!

Our Stallion

Jokers Wild, who we call "Charlie", is our young Shire-cross stallion. Charlie was born in 2007 and is currently 15.3 hands tall. Built on a Shire horse foundation, Charlie combines light horse performance with the solid structure, easygoing personality, and robust work ethic of draft horses.

A beautiful bay, Charlie has a striking white face with a tear drop and mustache, four white socks with light feather, and a flashy flaxen tail which attracts comment from almost everyone who sees him!

Not bad for a big ol' draf' horse!

In September 2009, Charlie was shown in-hand as a two-year-old at Dressage at Devon. His overall score of 69.9 was very respectable, since the bulk of the competitors in his class were in the mid 70s. Only two horses (both from legendary Iron Spring Farm) broke 80. He scored an 8.5 on his walk, with favorable comments from the judge. We know that now, with his extensive driving, his trot has improved and we hope to show him again at Dressage at Devon.

Charlie was started driving July 4th weekend of 2009. He was started in a tandem pair in March 2010. ADS rules prohibited him from a Combined Driving Event (CDE) marathon before he was four, but he competed his first CDE at Elk Creek (Fair Hill, Maryland) in June 2011.

We expect to register Charlie with the American Warmblood registry and Sporthorse registry. With his success at Devon and numerous driving shows, we don't anticipate any problems with an inspection.

Charlie has not been ridden yet, although he has had some of the basics during driving training. Although exact plans are up in the air, our friends at Second Nature Farm may begin working with him under saddle in mid-2011. During a jump chute exercise as a two year old, Charlie was a star, quickly picking up the concept.

Despite being a young stallion, Charlie is a pretty laid back guy. Here, as a two year old, he takes a snooze after a workout. It's a good thing we had the trailer there to hold him up!

Personality is never in short supply with Charlie around. Here he shows his step-brother Shamus that it doesn't take a Clydesdale to fetch a stick.

in late 2010, we finally got to meet Charlie's grandsire, Metheringham Upton Isaac, of Ox Kill Farm in New York. The 19 hand Shire, imported from England, was a US and Canadian national champion stallion. After meeting him, we see where Charlie gets a lot of his personality and good looks, even if he didn't get all the stature.

When our friend Paul first met Charlie, he felt there was something special about him. We are thankful he decided to make Charlie part of our lives.

If you are looking for a stallion who balances attitude and performance and is built on a solid foundation, Charlie is available for breeding. He has been trained and evaluated at the Hofmann Center for Equine Reproduction at New Bolton Center, with favorable test results. We can ship cooled semen to you from NBC; live cover is available on a limited basis. Introductory incentives are available.

Bloodlines

On his sire's side, Charlie's bloodlines extend back to British royalty (as Shire horses go). You might enjoy following his bloodlines back from his grandsire Isaac. There is a drawing of his ancestor Lincolnshire Lad II, born in 1872, and a photo of Lincoln What's Wanted II, Champion Stallion in London, 1926. Have fun!
